Exclusive Interview with the .btc Domains btcdomain.btc @btcdomain_btc #ordinals

What is the .btc blockchain domain naming system, and how does it differ from traditional domain naming systems and other blockchain domain naming systems ?

When comparing ENS and our domain system, the main difference lies in the underlying blockchain technology. Ethereum, being natively supported by smart contracts, offers an easier path towards achieving a domain system. On the other hand, Bitcoin lacks smart contract capabilities and complex programmable logic, making it difficult to build a domain system directly on top of it.

To overcome this limitation, we leveraged ordinal and edged zero-knowledge technologies to achieve comparable features to ENS, including decentralization, trusted computing, and unique domains.

In contrast to Stack’s domain system, which stores metadata on the Stack network, our system stores metadata permanently on the Bitcoin mainnet.

Who developed the .btc blockchain domain naming system, and what was the motivation behind its creation?

Our lead programmer is a zero-knowledge enthusiast who also contributes to the STARK community and Cario Lang. Initially, our goal was to build a resolver for the .sats domain. However, due to the high level of duplication within the .sats domain, we quickly realized that it would be extremely challenging, if not impossible, to achieve.

As a result, we recognized the need for a new domain system that includes both a registrar and a resolver, specifically tailored for the ordinal community. This realization led us to build btcdomain, our innovative domain system that leverages the security and permanence of the Bitcoin blockchain to provide a robust and decentralized solution for domain registration and resolution.

How does the .btc blockchain domain naming system function, and what are its key features and benefits?

Our key features focus on three core principles: uniqueness, Bitcoin-native infrastructure, and resolvability.

Uniqueness: Each .btc domain is linked to a unique inscription for a specified time period, ensuring that no two domains share the same inscription during that time.

Bitcoin-native: All metadata associated with our .btc domains is stored directly on the Bitcoin blockchain, rather than relying on side chains or other external platforms.

Resolvability: We have developed an open-source, decentralized resolver, enabling anyone to resolve our .btc domains directly from the Bitcoin blockchain using this tool.

We offer two primary functions for .btc domains: registration and resolution, which are explained in more detail below:

A. Domain Registration: When you submit a domain registration request, several nodes (currently 5, increasing to 20 in the near future) verify the domain’s availability. If the domain is available, the nodes will provide their signatures. Once at least 4 signatures (increasing to 16 soon) are collected, the domain becomes valid and registered.

B. Domain Resolution: The decentralized resolver continuously scans every Bitcoin transaction to identify those involving domain inscriptions or transactions. If a relevant transaction is detected, the resolver updates its local database accordingly. With each new block added to the blockchain, the resolver remains up to date. By utilizing the API we have prepared, you can always access the latest information on .btc domains.

What are the potential risks or downsides of using .btc blockchain domain names, and how can they be mitigated?

Potential risks or downsides associated with using .btc blockchain domain names, along with suggested mitigation strategies, include:

Overlapping Domain Names: The introduction of .btc domains on the Bitcoin mainnet may initially cause confusion, as other platforms such as Stacks also use the .btc domain extension. To address this issue, it is essential to invest in educational initiatives and clear communication strategies to differentiate between the various .btc domain implementations.

Phishing and Scams: As with any domain system, there is a risk of malicious actors using .btc domains to deceive users or facilitate scams. Implementing robust security measures, educating users about potential threats, and encouraging the use of trusted, verified domain names can help mitigate these risks.

Regulatory Challenges: The adoption of .btc domains may face regulatory challenges or scrutiny in some jurisdictions. Keeping abreast of regulatory developments and working closely with relevant authorities can help address potential legal and compliance concerns.

Scalability and Network Congestion: As the popularity of .btc domains grows, there may be increased demand on the Bitcoin network, leading to potential scalability issues and network congestion. Implementing solutions such as layer-2 protocols or other scaling technologies can help ensure the continued smooth operation of .btc domains.

Adoption and Awareness: Widespread adoption of .btc domains requires users to be aware of their benefits and functionality. A comprehensive marketing and outreach campaign can help raise awareness and drive adoption among potential users, ultimately mitigating the risk of low uptake.

What are the potential use cases for .btc blockchain domain names, and how might they be leveraged by individuals and organizations?

Potential use cases for .btc blockchain domain names encompass various applications that can benefit both individuals and organizations. These domain names can be leveraged in the following ways:

Simplified Transactions: .btc domains can streamline Bitcoin transactions by allowing users to send and receive BTC using an easily-remembered domain, such as andy.btc, rather than a complex string of characters like 3AoLNYBttAU3ddqgpJeRW3aNr1JhEKGkB9. This makes BTC transactions more convenient and accessible.

Personalized Inscriptions: .btc domains can be used to create unique, personalized inscriptions on the Bitcoin blockchain. This can be a valuable tool for individuals or organizations looking to create memorable and branded blockchain-based identities.

Enhanced Security: By utilizing .btc domains, users can mitigate the risks associated with clipboard-based malware, making transactions more secure and providing an additional layer of protection.

User-friendly Decentralized Applications (dApps): Organizations can develop dApps using .btc domains, which can make these applications more accessible and user-friendly. This can, in turn, drive adoption and expand the potential user base for dApps built on the Bitcoin blockchain.

Improved Branding and Marketing: Businesses and individuals can leverage .btc domains to promote their brand or online presence within the Bitcoin ecosystem. This can help establish trust and recognition among users while enhancing the overall visibility of their products, services, or personal profiles.

How have different stakeholders, including businesses, and individuals, responded to the emergence of the .btc blockchain domain naming system, and what are their views on its potential impact?

The emergence of the .btc blockchain domain naming system has generated diverse responses from various stakeholders, including businesses and individuals. Their views on its potential impact can be summarized as follows:
