NFT domains, also known as non-fungible tokens, are a new type of blockchain digital asset that can be used in a variety of ways.
One of the most popular uses for NFT domains is replacing long alpha numeric crypto addresses with human readable names eg Cannes.filmfestival instead of 0x495j947277749ce643f68ac8c248420045cb9b5e
Some NFT domains like Fio protocol domain names start with @ instead of . (dot) but they function in similar ways. Eg Cannes@filmfestival or cannes.filmfestival
There is therefore no collision conflict between for example @wallet and .wallet TLDs or slds.
Both Cannes.filmfestival and cannes@filmfestival can be mapped to wallet addresses and used to send and receive crypto.
However there are various providers of the .wallet tld and this could cause confusion and collisions. UNSTOPPABLE Domains and The Handshake Naming Service (HNS) both own a wallet tld on different blockchains and the matter is now before the legal courts. The legal judgement on that case will set a precedent for the entire blockchain naming service.
Only Fio protocol domains will not be affected because of their first to market use of the @tld instead of .tld
The blockchain naming services could also come together under an ICANN like organization and work together to avoid naming collisions but this is easier said than done. This lack of coordination could hamber the mainstream adoption of (dot) NFT domain tlds. Fortunately, Fio protocol domains and crypto handles do not have this problem. Anyone can easily register a free Fio crypto handle here. Anyone can easily register a Fio Domain here.
NFT domains are digital real estate and as with physical real estate location and quality is essential. Not all blockchain domain naming services are created equal. So do your own research and homework before buying NFT domains or NFT tlds.
Did I say TLD? Yes, in Web3 you can own your own tld and companies like FREENAME.IO pay 50% royalties on slds sold to the tld owners. You can buy a Freename tld here. However be aware of potential tld collisions with other naming services like ICANN or Decentraweb for example.
Freename.io allows you to file a trademark registration on your tlds and maybe this is a good idea to legally protect your tld. That said, do your own research. This article is not investment advice.
Other popular blockchain naming services are UNSTOPPABLE DOMAINS, ENS and Handshake. All have their pros and cons. So please do your best homework.
NFT domains can also be used for a variety of purposes, such as creating a website, hosting a decentralized application, or even as a form of digital collectible.
Another use for NFT domains is in the gaming industry. NFT domains can be used to create unique in-game items or experiences that can be bought and sold on the open market. This allows game developers to create new revenue streams and incentivize players to engage with their games in new ways.
NFT domains can also be used as digital identity in the metaverse.
In summary, NFT domains are a versatile and powerful new form of digital asset that can be used for a variety of purposes, such as sending or receiving crypto, digital real estate, gaming, metaverse id’s and digital art.
As the technology and infrastructure surrounding NFT domains continue to develop, it’s likely that even more use cases will emerge in the future.
