Phil Johnston is the Business Development Content Lead at Unstoppable Domains, the #1 NFT Domains company in the world. They make it possible for everyone in the world to own their digital identity forever, for as little as $5. If you are reading this and you don’t own your NFT domain, you can mint it here. Phil Jonhston NFT domain is ItsPhil.nft.
I have had the pleasure of attending many Twitter Spaces hosted by ItsPhil.nft and I have to admit that he is one of the most gracious and excellent hosts in Web3. I have learned so much from his Tweeter spaces about Web3, NFT domains and the blockchain.
He also keeps one of the finest and well-groomed beards in Web3. If you know about grooming a beard, please reach out to ItsPhil.nft on Twitter and send him some tips in the DM.
That said, lets jump right into the amazing interview with the legend himself.

Why is Gm the best way to start your Twitter day?
I’m a big fan of positive thinking and positive visualization. Just like how they’ve shown that smiling can make you happy, saying Gm is kind of the same thing. It’s also polite to say good morning so why not?

You officially want to rebrand NFTs as digital assets. Why?
When you hear the word NFTs, a few things probably come to mind first and not all of it positive. At the core, it’s about provable digital ownership. We’re spending more and more of our time online and creating digitally. Before NFTs, there wasn’t a way to prove who did or owned what online. Now we can. NFTs as a term has become somewhat pigeonholed and is due for a rebrand. Digital assets is a good description of what we’re actually building and investing in here.

You have the most phenomenal beard at Unstoppable. How long have you been grooming it and how do you care for it?
Thank you! There are a few other great beards at UD so maybe we should start a club. I’ve had some sort of facial hair for most of the last 10-15 years and can’t see myself going clean shaven ever again, unless it’s for a bet, or I’m on the lam. It takes a lot of trimming, and you have to treat it like regular hair with shampoo, conditioner, combing etc. According to my wife, I need to take better care of it, so if any other guys out there have beard tips drop me a dm.

What is your origins story with Unstoppable Domains and what exactly is your favorite part of your job?
I got connected to UD through a startup accelerator, BoostVC. I had a VR startup a few years back in one of their early cohorts, and UD was part of it a year or two later. NFTs were quickly taking over my time with most of my days spent on Twitter, Discord and Opensea. When Matt G posted in the BoostVC slack that they were hiring, I jumped on it.
Unstoppable really is a great place to work with an amazing and smart team, so it’s hard to pick one thing as my favorite. I had never hosted a Space before joining UD, and that wasn’t originally such a large part of my role. It’s been great to see the community response to the partner spaces, so I might have to pick that as my favorite.

Have you ever been rugged in Web3? If so, what is your rug pull story?
I’ve been rugged so many times, but my first one was B20. For those of you who weren’t degenning back then, early 2021 Beeple was the #1 king. A major investor scooped up 20 Beeple 1/1s and put them all in a vault, fractionalized with a B20 token. Basically, went from $20-$25 to 20 cents. Good times.

How would you explain Unstoppable NFT Domains to long beard Abraham Lincoln if he were still alive?
That’s a tough one. Probably would be closest to a signature for him – a way to prove who has done what or a mark that identifies him to other people.

What unstoppable NFT domain utilities are you excited about and why?
Decentralized email and web browsing are two really cool ones. For working in Web3, I still have a lot of my digital footprint on centralized servers. Would be great to go more decentralized.

I noticed that you are a good photographer and there are some amazing shots on your Twitter account. Do you plan to turn them into NFTs? I would love to collect your work!
Thank you! Right now it’s more of a hobby for when I’m out hiking or traveling, but I have some ideas that I’m starting to work on. Will keep you posted!

When you are not working to onboard the world into web3, what do you do to relax?
You can find me hanging out with my wife, dog, cat cooking, hiking, or playing poker. Although that last one isn’t too relaxing usually…
